The formation of Nursultan Nazarbayev as the first president of independent Kazakhstan is presented in the context of the events which surrounded the rise and fall of the Soviet Union and the emergence of new independent states. Origin and working biography of Nazarbayev is in many ways typical of those circles of the Soviet leaders, who supported the transformation of the old political system. But unlike most of the reformers of the perestroika period, from the very beginning Nazarbayev’s aim was creation, not destruction. Able to guarantee peace and stability in the future of his country, he built a successful modern state. While maintaining close business relationships with former Soviet republics, Kazakhstan managed to build partnership and mutually beneficial relations with key countries of East and West.
The closure of the Semipalatinsk nuclear test site and the active role of Nazarbayev in international peacekeeping initiatives made him famous and authoritative political figure of our time.
The book by Russian writer Sergei Plekhanov about Nursultan Nazarbayev – a great personality and a prominent politician – begins a series of "World leaders" by the publishing house "International Relations".
